2021 Annual Report

Welcome

Dear Friends,

After a year that was darkened by isolation and loss, 2021 brought the promise of reconnection and renewal. New vaccines made it safer for us to spend time with our families, friends and communities, and to celebrate the relationships that bring so much meaning to our lives.

For 125 years, the Forward’s independent Jewish journalism has been powered by our relationships with our readers, subscribers and donors. In 2021, we strengthened these bonds, continuing our historic work even as we advanced our strategic goals to:

  1. Create excellent Jewish journalism;
  2. Connect, engage and grow our audience;
  3. Be the platform for civil discourse for matters that divide American Jews;
  4. Embrace our history and leverage our archive to connect Jews across generations, and support the continued vitality of Yiddish language and culture; and
  5. Build a 21st-century nimble newsroom within a nonprofit digital media business model.

During another momentous year of news, and in the face of increasing threats to independent media, the Forward’s journalists worked around the clock to explain what was going on and why it mattered. We created new ways for you to connect with our work by revamping our newsletters, investing in interactive social media and reintroducing our historic advice column, “A Bintel Brief,” as a hit podcast. And we celebrated our history and culture by bringing them into the digital future, sharing treasures from our archive and created a Yiddish TikTok channel, passing Yiddish on to younger audiences.

Our work to build deeper relationships with our audience reflects our commitment to the Forward’s mission: to inspire readers of all ages, and animate conversation across generations and diverse segments of the American Jewish community. We never take these relationships for granted; we strive every day to earn your trust.

So much of this was made possible because of your support. We hope you share in our pride at the accomplishments included in this report — because we couldn’t have done it without you.

Thank you and zayt gezunt,

Rachel Fishman Feddersen

Mission, Vision and Values

The Forward was founded in 1897 as a Yiddish-language daily newspaper. For more than 120 years, we have helped generations of immigrants enter American life, broken some of the most significant news stories of the century, and stood among the nation’s most eloquent defenders of democracy and Jewish rights. Now a fully digital publication, we continue to honor and build on this legacy as the leading Jewish voice in American journalism today.

Our Mission, Vision and Values are informed by our history and our relationships with our loyal readers and stakeholders. They articulate the change we want to see in the world and how our approach to journalism can help make it happen.

Mission

The Forward is the most significant Jewish voice in American journalism. Our outstanding reporting on cultural, social and political issues inspires readers of all ages and animates conversation across generations and different segments of our community. Our English and Yiddish platforms build on a century-old legacy maintained in our archives and lead to a deeper understanding of what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century.

Vision

The Forward envisions a vibrant, connected global Jewish community informed by our shared history and committed to justice, compassion, truth and our collective responsibility to bridge our divides.

Values

Accountability
Through rigorous, even-handed journalism, we hold leaders accountable to the people and communities they serve. At the same time, we believe we must continuously earn the public’s trust by delivering on promises, operating with empathy and upholding our core values.‍

Courage
We pursue the truth wherever it takes us, delivering the news, investigations, narrative storytelling and commentary that our community needs and deserves.‍

Integrity
We provide fair and full reporting in the highest tradition of public-service journalism, a cornerstone of resilient democracy. Through our work, we help build the foundation for a just, open, pluralistic society.

Independence
As a nonprofit supported by our readers and a broad array of philanthropies, we are not beholden to any individual, institution or ideology. We are always relevant but also irreverent, challenging conventional wisdom in respectful ways as we showcase the full spectrum of voices shaping our experience.

Yiddishkeit
We revel in the richness of our culture and history, providing a smorgasbord of art and politics, argument and understanding. We also share our rich Yiddish heritage, promoting it as a living treasure for future generations. Sharing stories, in English and Yiddish, of the diverse ways Jews of all backgrounds — and our neighbors — live and think and celebrate and mourn enhances our human connections. Ours is a particularly Jewish-American way of looking at the world: contrarian, cosmopolitan, fiercely intelligent and wickedly funny.

Impact

The Forward experienced a surge of new traffic during the pandemic as readers came looking for trustworthy journalism grounded in integrity and ethics. We built on that momentum in 2021, continuing to engage a large, diverse, multigenerational audience. Beyond our own website, we leveraged a variety of new and growing platforms, from social media to newsletters and podcasts, to reach people wherever they get their news and engage with Jewish community and culture.

BY THE NUMBERS

Awards & recognition

Serving the Jewish community with independent, high-quality reporting and storytelling matters more than any award — but that doesn’t mean we’re not proud of those honors. In 2021, the Forward received a record number of accolades across the Jewish community and the media industry: a testament to the power and impact of our work.

In the News

Additionally, many of the world’s leading media outlets referred to the Forward’s coverage throughout the year.

Highlights

From the powerful impact of our stories to the preservation of Jewish history and culture, every aspect of the Forward’s work saw new growth, recognition and engagement in 2021.

Producing Excellent Jewish Journalism

The Forward is a vital source of trustworthy information and cultural enrichment for the American Jewish community. In 2021, we invested in growing our newsroom and increasing the breadth, depth and excellence of our journalism.

Covering the Year's
Biggest Stories

The Forward brings a distinctive Jewish perspective and nuance to every article. Our in-depth coverage of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol highlighted the role of white nationalism and conspiracy theories in motivating the attack. We provided on-the-ground coverage of the historic rally against antisemitism in Washington; the vandalism of a replica Torah at George Washington University; and the trial of the Unite the Right rally organizers in Charlottesville, Virginia. After the devastating condominium collapse in Surfside, Florida, we shared the voices of Surfside’s Jewish community — and the power of their uniquely Jewish response.

Making an Impact

The Forward’s public-service journalism exposes and challenges antisemitism, and holds our community institutions and leaders to account. We broke the story that Rabbi Sheldon Zimmerman, a leader of the Reform movement, had engaged in “sexually predatory” behavior with at least three women, according to an investigation by Manhattan’s Central Synagogue. We published the first-ever database of monuments to Nazi collaborators and Holocaust perpetrators, prompting a Belgian town to remove a monument and rename their town square. And after we pointed out that the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures left out almost any mention of Hollywood’s Jewish pioneers, the museum acknowledged its mistake and announced plans to commemorate Hollywood’s Jewish founders in its permanent exhibition.

Elevating Jewish Art and Culture

The Forward’s award-winning coverage of Jewish art, film, literature and performance gives a glimpse into the richness of Jewish culture and deepens our readers’ understanding of what it means to be Jewish. In 2021, we took a deep dive into the Jewish roots and interpretations of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” profiled diverse and contemporary artists like choreographer Claudia Schreier, and enhanced our visual storytelling with photography and video features.

Providing a Platform for Civil Discourse

Enthusiastic debate has always been a staple of Jewish culture, but the mounting divisiveness in America today is threatening our community's ability to engage with differing perspectives. Amid this tension, the Forward has continued to not just invite, but encourage our readers to engage with perspectives that both respect and challenge their own opinions.

Following the release of the Pew Research Center’s latest survey of American Jews, we shared a series of reactions, conversations and explorations of what it means to be Jewish.

Robin Washington, an acclaimed veteran journalist and early organizer of Jews of Color, joined our team as Editor-at-Large. He writes an Opinion column, works to recruit diverse contributors and staff, and consults across the organization on addressing systemic racism.

During the outbreak of violence in Israel and Gaza in May 2021, we published a wide range of perspectives on the conflict from Israeli, Palestinian and American contributors.

Sharing Our Yiddish Heritage

The Forverts, our legacy Yiddish publication, continued to publish the very best Yiddish-language writing about the vast world of Yiddish culture. In 2021, we ventured into new multimedia content, making Yiddish accessible to everyone, regardless of fluency.

At less than one year old, our Yiddish Word of the Day series surpassed 1 million total views on Facebook and YouTube, and the Yiddish Word of the Day Facebook group has become one of the largest and most active Yiddishist communities on social media.

We continued to publish the world’s only digital Yiddish-language crossword puzzle — with more word games in the works.

The Forverts’ videos featuring Yiddish musicians and comedians entertained a large, global audience. Daniel Kahn’s Yiddish version of “This Land Is Your Land” became a viral hit music video, with more than 160,000 YouTube views.

Preserving Our History

As a longstanding publication with a robust archive, the Forward has been uniquely positioned to use more than a century of photographs and articles to engage different generations in learning about American Jewish history. In 2021, we took our historical storytelling to a new level.

Our archive’s social media campaign, #ForwardBackwards, connected the past and present with timely posts from our archives.

We reopened our archival exhibition, “Pressed: Images from the Jewish Daily Forward,” at the Museum at Eldridge Street and curated a virtual exhibition on the Urban Archive digital platform.

We launched a new “Ask the Archivist” column to encourage our readers to write in with questions about Jewish history or their own family histories. One of our first guests? Actor David Duchovny.

We won our first grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, which will help us ensure the long-term safety of our collection.

Connecting, Engaging and Growing Our Audience

A publication is nothing without its readers, and in 2021, we put those relationships first. Through updates to our website, new subject-specific newsletters and a robust social media strategy, we saw unprecedented community growth — and got to hear from you more than ever before.

We revamped our free newsletters to keep you informed about the Jewish news you care about and put you in touch with the journalists who lead our coverage, including News Director Benyamin Cohen and Editor-in-Chief Jodi Rudoren.
Our newsletters about Jewish art, books, and Yiddish enable our readers to dive deeper into the cultural topics that most excite them.
We used social media to listen to your ideas, answer your questions, and hear your stories. Quotes from our social media followers became the heart of our retrospective on the 20th anniversary of 9/11, with dozens of readers sharing their stories and experiences.
Drawing on the legacy of Jewish advice, we gave the Forward’s century-old advice archive of “A Bintel Brief” a 21st-century makeover when we launched our first professionally crafted podcast series. “A Bintel Brief” adds a modern twist to this Jewish tradition, helping our readers deal with the dilemmas of everyday life.

Hosting Events that Resonate

While vaccinations and new safety protocols began to make in-person events a reality once more in 2021, we continued to host the online events that kept us safely connected — no matter where we happened to be logging on.

More than 20,600 people registered for our 34 virtual conversations with community leaders, politicians, artists and other newsmakers in 2021.

We held our second virtual gala fundraiser, celebrating with hundreds of members of the Forward family from around the world. The program featured an amazing lineup of writers, comedians and musicians, and highlighted the many ways the Forward continues to lead the field in telling the story of the diverse Jewish American experience.

Harnessing the power of technology, we hosted live, spontaneous conversations on Facebook and YouTube about breaking news and the Forward’s latest investigations.

Increasing Our Sustainability

The Forward is  reader-supported: The generosity of our subscribers and donors allows us to keep publishing the stories you care about, with the integrity you trust. In 2021, we saw an unprecedented outpouring of support, which made an incredible impact on our ability to sustain our work for years to come.

Our supporters

Thank you to each and every one of our donors. We are very grateful to our generous supporters who contributed to the Forward and enable us to deliver high-quality news and culture reporting every day.

Abraham Cahan Legacy Society

Abraham (“Ab”) Cahan was a visionary. When he founded the Forward in 1897, he changed American journalism forever and earned a place in the pantheon of America’s greatest editors. His legacy of activism and hope for the Jewish future continues to inspire us today. In his honor, we have created the Abraham Cahan Legacy Society.

L’dor V’dor. For the Forward that means passing along our love of the truth and social justice, while strengthening Jewish identity for a whole new generation of young people. Making a legacy gift is a meaningful way to show your support of the Forward’s mission while also accommodating your own personal, financial, estate-planning and philanthropic goals. We thank those who joined the Abraham Cahan Legacy Society by making a legacy gift to the Forward.
